This piece was written for the purpose of examining the question of what, or where, the origins of creativity might be, as prompted by the theme of a vocal composition festival I attended in California in 2019. While I first tried to focus on one possible source of creativity, there were multiple answers swimming around in my mind. Does our creativity come from nature? fear and grief? human relationships? a deity? from nothing? I couldn’t decide. So, back to the drawing board I went: what if, instead of trying to find an answer, I just let the music ask all the questions?
